Spay angel started through one generous
donor sponsoring the spay/neuter procedures on 9 shelter cats. It works on
the principal that each time an "Angel" cat is adopted the
money goes toward spaying or neutering another qualifying cat that has been
patiently waiting for their chance at a forever home. By charging the
standard $70 adoption fee, we are also able to cover additional special care
these cats sometimes need, such as ear mite or flea treatment. All of the
"Angel" cats are housed together up front of the shelter in an open
cat room for easy viewing. Since the beginning of the Spay Angel
program, feline adoptions have improved by roughly 85%. Help
us keep the chain of life going! |
The Cat Haven Project is
one of the most important endeavors we began implementing from our
beginning. The goal of the Cat Haven project is to build a safe, comfortable,
and positive atmosphere to house and care for our feline residents.
Changes have already started with the help of some key local businesses
and volunteers in creating a medical room, better quarantine areas, and
a second laundry. (We are seeking a donation of a good used or new stackable
washer & dryer all you cat lovers!) This new medical room will allow us
to completely isolate cases that endanger the other residents’ health, yet
still give the sick or injured animal a chance at recovery. Also, seasonal
problems, such as upper respiratory viruses (fall), and ringworm (spring),
can be treated more efficiently, while avoiding the total closure of the cat
room for extended periods. A better, 2-stage isolation will allow more time
for observation of incoming cats before they are placed for adoption, and
less contact with new admissions while waiting. As the project continues, a
small maternity ward will be created out of an existing store-room. Finally, our biggest
project this year will be starting the total renovation of the existing cat
room to what we envision as a completely "cage-less" environment,
where felines up for adoptions are instead in tiled, sunlit kennels with
glass doors for easy viewing, but safe from unwitting hands that may spread
an undetected illness from cage to cage. This will allow the personalities of
the cats to shine through, as they will be under less stress, have fewer
illnesses, and have room to climb and scratch to their hearts content. This
is so very important as the feline soul, longs to be
free. This will be about as close as possible to that, and we can't wait to
begin that stage of construction. Estimated cost will be near $20,000,
but advances can be made in many small stages, ALL improving the day to
day lives of our cats while we raise the money needed. |
